About the Design
The centerpiece of this jersey is an extraordinarily detailed recreation of the Golden Pectoral from Tovsta Mohyla — widely regarded as one of the greatest surviving masterpieces of Scythian goldwork.
Discovered in 1971 by legendary Ukrainian archaeologist Borys Mozolevskyi, this crescent-shaped royal pectoral was found in the central burial chamber of the Tovsta Mohyla (“Thick Mound”) kurgan near Pokrov, Ukraine. Weighing an impressive 1,150 grams (over 2.5 pounds) and crafted from nearly pure 24-carat gold, this breathtaking artifact is believed to have been worn by a powerful Scythian king or high chieftain. It survived ancient grave robbers by mere centimeters — a near miracle that preserved one of the most important archaeological finds in Eastern Europe. It now resides in the Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine in Kyiv.
Who were the Scythians? The Scythians were a formidable confederation of Iranian-speaking, semi-nomadic warrior tribes who ruled the vast steppes north of the Black Sea from approximately the 9th to 3rd centuries BC. Master horsemen, skilled archers, and fearsome warriors, they were also sophisticated artisans and traders. Greek historian Herodotus wrote extensively about them, describing their rich culture, rituals, and fearsome reputation. Their elite were buried in massive earthen mounds called kurgans, filled with extraordinary gold treasures that reflected their deep connection to nature, mythology, and warfare.
The Golden Pectoral itself is a stunning example of Greco-Scythian art. Likely created by highly skilled Greek goldsmiths (possibly in the workshops of the Bosporan Kingdom) for a Scythian royal patron, it masterfully blends Hellenistic technique with authentic Scythian symbolism.
The pectoral features three elaborate horizontal registers packed with intricate scenes:
