About the Design

This striking white line-art design is an exact stylistic replica of a powerful stylized elk (or large antlered deer-like creature) tattooed on the right arm of a Pazyryk chieftain, excavated from Kurgan 2 in the Pazyryk Valley, Altai Mountains, Siberia (circa 5th–4th century BC). The original tattooed skin is preserved in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Pazyryk culture belonged to the greater Scythian world — fierce, semi-nomadic Iranian-speaking horsemen and warriors who dominated the vast steppes and mountain regions. Thanks to the permafrost in their burial mounds (kurgans), the bodies of their elite were naturally mummified, preserving incredibly detailed tattoos inked directly into their skin with soot and bone needles.

The chief from Pazyryk Kurgan 2 had some of the most elaborate tattoos ever found. His right arm featured dynamic animals and powerful symbolic creatures, including this majestic antlered elk. In the Scythian “Animal Style,” these large antlered beasts were depicted with flowing, ornate antlers that branch dramatically, often adorned with decorative elements. They symbolized strength, agility, nobility, and a deep spiritual connection to the wild steppe and forest environments that surrounded them.

Elk and red deer were vital animals for the Scythians — revered for their speed, endurance, and imposing presence across the Ukrainian, Russian, and Siberian landscapes. In their art, these creatures were stylized into powerful, almost mythical forms that embodied the untamed spirit of nature and the warrior’s own vitality.

Our design takes the original archaeological line-work and renders it as a clean, high-impact, symmetrical graphic optimized for apparel. The dynamic pose, sweeping antlers with intricate branching details, curved body lines, and ornate decorative motifs pop dramatically in white against the black jersey.
